31 minutes without mentioning Doctor Who – very impressive, but disappointing. I need more Who! Perhaps towards the end of the episode?
31 minutes! at 17:09 in this HAWPcast you can hear the *bleep*bleep* of Solid Snakes’ codec. Ringtone eh? Or is there a Burchian branch to Philanthropy?!
Haven’t finished the episode, but on the topic of semi-interesting-non-sci-fi-character-building-shows, you might want to check out Train 48. It’s a Canadian show about a bunch of commuters near Toronto, it’s roughly scripted but mostly ad libbed. I have to admit I haven’t seen a lot of it, but I did enjoy it while it was on the air. Due the setup of the show, it’s heavily character driven, just real people in real situations. Hopefully it is what you’re looking for.
archer is awesome. wait, i had something for this….
I feel I should point out there is a third series of the Mighty Boosh, but it’s far worse than the other two so you may not want to watch it.
Also my personal pick for a tv show that’s mostly just characters shooting the shit would have to be Gilmore Girls. Just super tight dialogue with largely inconsequential plots; it’s awesome.
Maybe the appeal you find in Sci-Fi comes from the unique creativity of the characters’ backgrounds. A lot of the creativity of characters comes from their back story and seeing how that back story shaped their present personality. Sci-Fi allows writers to create characters with complex, otherworldly, bizarre and creative stories and then speculate how they would affect the development of a human consciousness. In normal fiction you can’t create a young boy who was accepted into an alien hive mind society which was destroyed by an intergalactic empire, or an alien whose body is slowly being taken over by nanobots he injected into himself so he can defeat an insane scientist trying to destroy all sentient life in the galaxy. Sci-Fi can be just as character driven as normal fiction, in fact it can be character driven is a way wholly unique unto itself.
Apologies if you already know about these, but:
For character driven shows, did you ever see Red Dwarf? Last (implied) human in existence, in a severe bout of denial, trying to get back to Earth with only a creature evolved from his pregnant cat, a hologram of his dead bunk mate, a senile super computer and (later) a service droid with self esteem issues. If possible, try not to see the ‘special edition’ versions where they went back and put cgi into everything – not only is it horribly distracting, the models from the original looked better.
For the best videogame or anime villain – for me, it is Shodan. Not that I think I am being clever or anything by saying it, as it is a lot of peoples first choice, along with nodding their head and and going “yes, yes, I see I see, great minds think alike, eh wot?”.
There was a good article over at RPS about her, and why there shouldn’t be a System Shock 3. I call it Borg Syndrome – whenever you have an enemy defeated so many times, they become less of a threat and more like a joke.

And searching for that led me to Shodan/GLaDOS fan fiction. If you can think of it, there is porn of it.

Hey I just noticed that on last fm your podcast is tagged as rape. erm can you guys fix that
Yeah, as has been said, there is a third season of The Mighty Boosh, but it was really, really terrible.
Though you guys have totally different opinions to me (Stephen Moffat > Russel T Davies, Amy Pond > Rose Tyler, Bill Bailey’s standup = Awesome, most American comedians I’ve seen = Lame), so you might like it.
There was, at least 2 episodes I kinda liked, and the rest just made me feel sick.
Oh yeah, and congratulations on the whole marriage thing.
I feel the same! New Doctor Who is great. I love Scott Pilgrim (although the story more than the actual character now). And Bill Bailey’s stand-up is excellent, although he tends to repeat himself in different shows. I guess the sign of a good podcast is one made by people who have completely different tastes than you but you kieep listening.
But also, in terms of good British stand-up, I’d recommend Russel Watson, Dara O’Briain or Dylan Moran (although those last two are Irish, but whatever).
I think British and American comedy is completely different, and it’s hard to judge when they’d work for each other. I say this, mainly because when you said you didn’t like Bill Bailey’s stand-up, I did a very shocked face. I think it might be down to surrealism, which been pretty much mastered by British comedy, and it’s hard to find an American comedy show which parallels this. Although, Tim and Eric’s awesome show (Great job), is a nice portion of mind-fuck, which I think works quite nicely. Ever watched Green wing? Hospital comedy which is better and more original than it sounds.
theres three seasons of boosh and 3rd is hilarious watch it, but not on adult swim it censors all the good parts
Hey, in this episode you mention a serie, im from Denmark, and I dont think I quite understand what the name of the show is, Gur and Loke? Tinka tanka? Hope any of you can help, thanks.
Reguards Anders
P.S. Good work Anthony and Ashly, new rev rant any time soon?
the anime name is tengen toppa gurren lagann, but most people call is Gurren lagann for short.
Thanks.
“FUCK THE MAN”
Ashley’s a Singer? What was up with the HAWP, “I love Games” ? Was it done as a rush job, or was the bad singing intentional? I’m not doubting it, I’m just curious now that it’s been mentioned.
If you like Archer, you’d really like Frisky Dingo. Watch it.

Check Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace for an original Brit T.V show – worth it for its intro alone… Pre Boosh Julian Baratt as Padre and Noel Fielding in an ape costume in episode 4, again its a bit of an acquired taste, but as a piss take of bad 80′s horror writing its well worth a go.
I squealed like a little girl when I heard Anthony stumble all over my twitter name.
There are 3 series of the boosh which I know was mentioned earlier, but I’d like to say that I’m surprised that you guys didn’t mention how fantastic Julian is.
Maybe you guys could talk more about the boosh next week?
Or watch more of it and say something?
I’d have to agree with everyone else who has said that Boosh series 3 was rather balls except for the episode with ‘the crack fox’ which was pretty funny.
Thought I’d recommend some other British comedy series that are well worth checking out if you haven’t seen them already, anything by Chris Morris is great but Brass Eye is probably the series he is most (in)famous for in the UK, Big Train, Peep Show, Look Around You and The Thick of It are all amazingly good as well!
Anthony/Ashly, if you guys want a show with good focus on character you really should check out Stargate Universe. It’s pretty much the complete opposite of the other Stargate series, in that it’s almost entirely serial and because they mostly sit around on an alien ship they have a lot of time to dedicate to exploring characters. I personally love it.
Wow, I didn’t even see your comment when I posted mine. I agree with you, but kinda get annoyed with some of the things which the writers do with the characters in the show.
Stargate Universe likes to pick times to advance certain characters, while kinda giving other characters the shaft. Like the latest episode has character development for one character, but then shafts three characters who were just in a character developing situation by solving their problem partially off screen. It’s an interesting show that would probably do better when they stop trying to be like Battlestar Galactica.
Yo dawg. I was rock’n out in elementary school with “The Magic School Bus” when it was just a series of books!
I also have a recurring dream that I have to go back to high school to retake a class or my university degree won’t count. Fucking hate that dream.
And cats DO save people from fires. back in ’94, my cousin’s cat came into her from outside freaking out. Then she meowed a lot and ran outside, looking back so my cousin would follow. Turned out the neighbor’s house was on fire! She called 911 and it was all cool. It even made the local news, so you KNOW it’s 2 lagit 2 quit.
………….even though nobody was in danger of dying because the neighbors weren’t home.
Wait, your proof that cats do in fact save people from fires is a story in which a cat does not save people from a fire?
Almost as good as Sharky the Friendly Shark.

“Seriously, call Kenny Loggins. Because you’re in the Danger Zone!”
The dialog is totally the best bit of HAWP. Trauma Centre was the best episode
