Hey Ash, Whatcha Playin: Gears of War

Clipboard01

I think Ash’s performance in this latest HAWP is probably one of her best. Though using the word “performance” in reference to a video like this, in any capacity, is probably a mistake.

Anyway, hope you dig the new episode.

    Loved it.

    TURBO-GAY

  2. Mr_Day says:

Your dad really has a knack for delivering life shattering judgements in a fantastic deadpan manner.

Out of curiosity, was there a reason the opening had a strange pink/purple tint to it?

Also, on a more personal note, will we finish the..ahem..message board story? It was getting kind of good there.

  3. HorseChoker says:

I actually paused it and read what he wrote…. that story should never see the light of day

  4. Tim says:

    Really? Gay jokes?

    Really?

This was easily one of the worst episodes ever.

  5. Cian says:

    …they where brothers… where. WHERE!?!

If you are going to write a gears fan fic at least get the spelling right.

Brilliant episode. Keep up the good work guys.

  6. Jo says:

I love how when Papa Burch says ‘That’s gay son’, it sounds like a public service announcement.

    Piercing Gayze

  7. Griff says:

I like how your/their dad had glasses on for his bit at the end.

  8. chazzhay says:

What does Ash say at the end; “gay gays” or “gay gaze”?

  9. Claytonian says:

    I like dad’s act-typing.

Funny. Maybe not the “story” but the delivery made this for sure. Very unoriginal as well.

I still got a laugh out of it.

  11. Noah says:

I don’t want to sound like a butt, but every episode is almost exactly the same; quick editing based on a few lines of dialogue with dad popping in. I guess that’s just what Hey Ash has turned into.

  12. King Poopsmith says:

Above was a lot of hate for this episode. I actually thought it was one of the funnier episodes.

Why? Probably because I spent about a month reading and writing fan fiction for Doctor Who on LJ. A huge proportion of it is so intensely homoerotic (and occasionally blatantly sexual despite Doctor Who being a largely asexual universe)…that it became extremely funny. You had to either be so insanely stuck in that world or absurdly homophobic to be able to take that stuff seriously on any level. However, the laughter and an absurd sense of sexuality started raping my imagination. I stopped reading it before it had a permanent effect.

It also helped that HAWP picked the most absurdly machismo game to hit mainstream sales in years. Seriously – the WE’RE SO MANLY! aspect of this game is so thick it’s hard to NOT joke about MANLY THINGS while playing it.

Finally…I’m relatively new to HAWP and spent the last month on a mystical spirit quest of employment opportunities. So…I might be lacking the perspective from those above.

TL;DR version – I thought it was full of awesome because it took a very fucked up world and it picked an excellent game to channel the fucked up factor.

    TOO SHORT!!!

I liked the jokes and the pacing and everything else about this episode — except for one thing. I don’t think it “felt right” for Anthony’s character to be writing that kind of fanfic in the first place. It was never explained why he was, and it just felt inconsistent. But if one can suspend disbelief for that much, the rest of the episode is as I said good.

    • Mr_Day says:

Ignoring the fact that you have to suspend disbelief for a show which featured a door that allowed you to read somones mind:

Anthony has, throughout the run, been picked on about his closet homosexuality. I thought it was a neat touch that his reaction to getting caught and mocked in this episode was the same as when Ash was asking him about buying Shadow Complex.

When aforementioned doorway to minds was used, Anthony was thinking of a muscle bound beefcake, complete with slightly campy 80s music. Him writing fanfic not only feels right, it is right. Baby.

    • CoinOp says:

It was an exercise in creative writing. He said so himself.

      • Tom Gerlick says:

Hey. Just because a person enjoys writing homoerotic Gears of War fan fiction doesn’t necessarily mean they’re gay.

(At least that’s what I tell myself)

        • King Poopsmith says:

It takes a really special person to write homoerotic fanfiction and somehow not be attracted to other males. Hell, I’m attracted to other males and I’m not even sure if I could legitimately do it. However…I could try it for the lulz Talk about Marcus’s manliness as he caresses his long and trusty Lancer as he contemplates slicing open some really hot aliens in an epically long and sweaty quest through a planet…while, along the way, learning more about himself and his latent feelings concerning his father.

But that wouldn’t be as lulzy as it would be GAY.

        • vandwedge says:

Conversely, just because someone is gay doesn’t mean they enjoy writing homoerotic Gear of War fan fiction. That’s what I meant in my original post.

  15. Tom Gerlick says:

I know I’m an English major because I not only paused and read what Anthony was writing but I started critiquing it. It’s not the worst prose I’ve seen on the Internet, but it feels a bit wordy and the tenses are all over the place. Plus I wonder if, due to the overwhelming machismo of the characters, that they would dispense with the euphemistic chatter and talk bluntly about what they want. But I’ve never played Gears of War so I could be completely off base here. But, as is the case in any criticism, you are free to take it or leave it.

    • supahhappyashfannumbahone says:

      Hello,

You are an English major who does not understand parody. Fanfics, especially gay ones, are usually written like bad harlequin romance novels, which are ripe with bad euphemisms. So that’s why it was written like that. Go to any given fanfic site and read some slash, you’ll see what I mean.

Ash in bathrobe. We’ve gotten Ash in bikini and bathrobe. I like the way this is going. Although if history teaches us anything, I’m going to get Anthony dressed as SC4 Ivy or something similar. D:

I thought it was a good episode, some of you guys are dickbags.

  18. usweasil says:

hey! have you ever thought of doing a HAWP episode of eterna darkness? especially since one of the main points in the game is to try and keep your sanity. i think it would be awesome.

  19. Edgar Gracia says:

Not a dangerous article, did it take you plenty of time to think about it?
