Hey Ash, Whatcha Playin’: Rock Band

hawopz

This week’s episode of Hey Ash, Whatcha Playin’ is about Rock Band. Sort of. I don’t think Ash and I have ever played Rock Band together, come to think of it.

A lot of people also seem to get some sort of incestuous vibe from this episode, which really isn’t intended. Just throwing that out there.

It used to be three times as long, but I cut out everything except for the jokes I especially liked. On the one hand, it’s much tighter than it would have been otherwise and, to me, considerably better. On the other hand, a lot of people seem to inexplicably love episodes I don’t (Trauma Center), so maybe I’m cutting out good stuff. I dunno.

If your videos were just pictures of ponies followed by smash cuts to your dad saying something awesome I think I’d still love them.

  2. Mr_Day says:

Well, on the bright side, it does mean you have extra content for the second season DVD.

Which we can watch, prefer to what you left in, and call you names for it. Like. I dunno. Kenneth? You look like a Kenneth.

  3. Nick says:

Dude, your dad is awesome! Just the simple lines like that are funny as hell

  4. Joe says:

Great fucking episode. Here’s a question for Anthony; should I play the void? From what you’ve said it sounds cool, but I’m a little scared. P.S. your beard’s getting pretty respectable, do you have as much trouble eating cereal as I do. My damn mustache gets in the way of the spoon and gets milk all over me. keep up the good work

  5. Hei says:

Wonderful, I love Ash’s accent (and I think burning the beard off might be a good idea. Just sayin)

  6. DaniusKang says:

How many takes did it take your Dad to say that straight faced?

  7. JonSolo says:

That was actually a pretty convincing London-Chav accent there, at least to my Americano ears. But I live in London, so I should know what that sounds like.

  8. RichardBlaine says:

Funny episode (as usual). Kind of surprising seeing Ash made up (a HAWP first?), but otherwise all the usual pieces were there. Also, I’m surprised to read that Anthony didn’t like the Trauma Center episode. I honestly think that him pushing the knife into Ash might be one of my hardest laughs in the history of the show (it just really caught me off guard).

  9. James says:

Cutting out the good stuff? May you let the viewer decide? Can’t get enough of Ashley think she’s amazing.

  10. Gaurav Sekhon says:

Tell you what: put the full version as a season 2 DVD extra. Deal? Deal.

Oh, and I loved it. And not because OMG ASHLEY OMGOMG, but rather because I really loved the part where she’s rattling off genres of music. I have probably heard that exact sentence come from a musician sometime, except it wasn’t part of a funny video. God help the music industry.

  11. mingo says:

    Fuck the man.

  12. Ral says:

I like the pseudo-documentary feel this one has with the interview portions.

Also, I don’t see how anybody could be getting any incestuous vibes from this video…

  13. Xander says:

Trauma Center was one of my favourite episodes. It has central idea behind it, you know where it’ll end off and the pay off is awesome. That said it still has a few jokes revolving around that idea that also deviate from the narrative, like ATLUS HARD and magically appearing a simon machine. They’re still really good jokes, but ones that play off the major joke of the episode.

If that makes sense. Sometimes the tighter focus is fantastic though, since the SOTC episode simply wouldn’t be as awesome if there was some kind of build-up. Since you do demonstrate a knack for the advantages of either approach, I don’t think there’s much to worry about.

  14. Chewie says:

Bravo! I did not get an incestuous vibe whatsoever!

Also, I’m loving the beard. It reeks of manliness! You should consider buying a Viking outfit for every day use. We could start calling Áni Stronggoat and, once we grow beards of similar magnitude, join your crew!

    …. yay!

  15. tihsanoglu says:

I got five on it what you got nigger Luniz

  16. kalidanthepalidan says:

Unfortunately I owned that CD in junior high. Sad face. :(

On a more positive note, I loved that episode! Very funny. I was surprised when it ended but didn’t feel as though it was too short. Any longer may have been a stretch. I think you got the content to length ratio (if such a thing exists, lets just say it does) perfect.

  17. waldfield says:

Hey, cutting room floor = more extras for the season 2 dvd. When’s that coming out anyway I want to buy one

  18. MRJ says:

Incestuous? I don’t see it. Bunch o’ dirty perverts out there.
Awesome episode. Your dad made me fall over laughing.

  19. Z80 says:

I laughed so hard at “We only play that one Creed song.”
Top notch performance by Ash during that clip at the end, too. You guys are the proverbial explosive device.

  20. Jake Ahola says:

I know I’m not really saying anything new, but thank you for HAWP. Rev, Ash and Dad are AWESOME! Also, some times I feel like I’m the only person who liked Ash with short hair. :P The GT community seemed to hate it.

  21. Jeff Frost says:

Dammit that Creed song… Though… Inspiration drawn from both this and Overlooked Games of 2009, has resulted in a game where you stare wistfully into the distance with a straight face, while Creed’s ‘With Arms Wide Open’ or Seal’s ‘Kiss From a Rose’ is playing in the background. First guy to Die/Smile Loses!

  22. I hate that song. But this was quite funny. Short and sweet.

  23. Aenea says:

    Love the singing, haha.

Also, Anthony you need to trim that shit, it looks terrible. Seriously you’d look so much better with a nice trimmed beard.

Ash looks super hot with make-up.

  24. Adam says:

Make an extended version of the episode for the dvd! :D

  25. Filipe says:

Awesome episode!! the dad scene was great.
    Keep making awesome episodes
HAWP has one fan here in Portugal :D sorry if something doesn’t make sence… english is my second language so it’s not perfect

  26. Brock says:

    Nice Billie Piper Ash.

    • Gaurav Sekhon says:

      I double down that comment.

      Very nice Billie Piper.

      “What does she talk like?”
      “Old England cockney.”
      “…’Ullo, guv’na!”

Oh, and I thought Ash was joking with how poorly the words in that song are pronounced… nope. 100% accurate. How did that become a song?

  27. AfroGeek says:

Ash: Normal > Ash: Make Up

One of the few girls I’ve seen look better in normal mode, USE THAT TO IT’S FULLEST EXTENT, ASHLEY BURCH, YOU ARE A GODDESS.

    Also, Anthony, BEARD POWER

  28. Yeep says:

    Loved this one!
Should’ve picked a Lacuna Coil song though. Ash really looked like their lead singer, Cristina Scabbia, in this one.

  29. MagicSwordKing says:

BEARD BROTHERS UNITE! I for one stand wholly behind this new bearded Burch, and believe that his power will only grow!

  30. mingo says:

You know for trying not to objectify Ash, i think this vid has been the worst to do that so far.

I mean she’s gorgeous with make up but i saw her very different than what i expected.

it took Papa Burch to remind me it was a hawp video.

    • mingo says:

      the* worst

    • Kad says:

I have to completely disagree. Ash was acting just as crazy as usual, getting into a different persona, changing her accent, etc. The makeup was a part of that. Don’t forget she also threatened to burn Anthony’s beard off.

    • MagicSwordKing says:

The series isn’t always pure “Ash is crazy” humor, so when Ash does anything less psychotic than the norm, does that mean that she’s there for eye candy?

She’s a pretty girl and all, and she shouldn’t hide that. The Rose Tyler accent and “This Is Spinal Tap” feel to everything she says, Anthony’s commentary, and Papa Burch’s immortal line at the end make it clear from the get go that this is HAWP, nothing more nothing less.

You can’t fight objectification of women, especially on the internet. Point to a HAWP video that doesn’t have some critical mass of comments to the effect of “zomg ash is so hot i wanna do things to her in my creepy shed” and I’ll recant that statement.

Best way to fight objectification isn’t to point it out, but rather to ignore it, because at the end of the day these cretins aren’t getting any until they learn to grow up.

      • mingo says:

        I see what you mean.

See, the jokes were funny but little things such as anthony being out of focus and ash practically glowing when being interviewed distracted me towards Ash.

it took a a shock factor from Papa to shake that.

I just got the dvd and saw the PAX panel pp and how Anthony was trying not to objectify Ash. Anyway, i thought about it and was amazed at how well he’d done that until i questioned this video. I mean it’s not trying to objectify her, i but i couldn’t help feeling like she was eye candy.

Yr totally right though, the best way to fight it is to ignore it.
i guess i just wanted my two cents in…

  32. Andres says:

Damn.. I KNOW I’ve heard the bit about the music genres before. It’s a reference to…. something. I’ve been thinking about it for the last hour and I can’t remember!!

Help guys.. please?? I’m dying here.

  33. Madcap says:

I’m finding it more and more difficult to look at Anthony without instantly thinking of Yusak Islam.

  34. Griffplar says:

I liked this episode, as usual. Particularly liked how the different instruments weren’t plugged into anything.

While I’m not usually for them, your Dad could have his own spin off.
That like Big Boss one was great, though I hadn’t seen the original at that time…

  35. Flightless Lobster says:

The incestuous thing. It’s because of the beard. Makes you look like a rapist.

  36. ANevskyUSA says:

What incestuous vibe? Are you are projecting perhaps? Wait, don’t answer that.

  37. Rood says:

Papa Burch really is the shiznit.

  38. pc says:

Am I the only one that thinks Ash looks better with less makeup than she had on in this one?

  39. Andres says:

Goddamn it.. finally I remembered what it was that Ashly reminded me of in this video:
