Someone needs to try this:

tombaker_archive_01_450_450x300

Go to a Renaissance Fair dressed up like the Doctor and look ridiculously confused about where you are and what’s going on. Mutter something about time being switched up, and how the technology you’re seeing doesn’t make sense for the period, and wonder aloud if you’ve made a mistake somewhere and merged two alternate timelines.

And if any of the staff catch on, experiment: is it possible that a Renaissance nerd, who, being a nerd, likely has a knowledge of other nerdy things, will be aware of what you’re attempting to do? If so, are they willing to take their Renaissance roleplay a step further and acknowledge your quirky roleplay, and not just pretend that they are a Renaissance-era wench, but a Renaissance-era wench who has met a time traveller and now has to cope with that fact? Could you, in fact, convince a random attendee or customer into being your companion for an hour purely by the force and bluster of your contrarian roleplay?

I have never seen anything like renaissance fairs in England, but I have seen people re-enacting important battles. I doubt I would want to try that trick at one of those – they are very lifelike swords they are holding, after all.

  2. Ellie says:

This takes a good idea and makes it entirely epic. Ah, how fun would that be?! Too fun, sir! TOO fun!

  3. Josh says:

Suddenly I wish I knew more about Dr. Who.

  4. Mirax says:

Already thought about trying this. I lack the clothes, but that’s it.

Bonus points if you bring a Police Box replica with you.

  5. Captain Spacker says:

What’s a renaissance fair for us poor limeys

  6. Gaurav Sekhon says:

Just bought a Tenth Doctor dark-brown-with-blue-pinstripes suit. The pinstripes are not as thick as the ones in the show, but hey. It’s pretty good.

I’m tall, skinny, and brown. And I can do my hair kinda messy. And maybe put on a brown coat.

Dude, I will totally do it if you can find me a renaissance fair in BC, Canada.

  7. Bob says:

Went to a Renaissance Fair recently and had the exact same thought. I unfortunately didn’t have a 16 foot long scarf handy at the time

  8. MagicSwordKing says:

Me, my sonic screwdriver, and my fourth doctor costume volunteer for this brave, great mission.

Now the question is do I really wanna push it by loading five accurately-painted pieces of wood in a truck and surreptitiously putting a TARDIS up in a parking space outside the venue.

  9. Obed says:

That would be really bad ass. Someone really needs to do that and record it. Now if a real actor from the show did it. Well sir. I’d say brilliant.

  10. Chainsawface says:

This would be the sort of thing yo would need to set up with friends ahead of time; if nobody plays along, you’d just make an ass of yourself.

  11. Kad says:

I don’t care if this would be extremely difficult to pull off, but this needs to be done. Preferably recorded, too.

  12. joeker lives says:

Oh, but they already did something like this on British TV. Here’s Jon Culshaw, being a real life troll in a British department store.

  14. Weiner Weapon Warfare says:

Couldn’t one do the same thing with like a Star Trek convention or something like that?

  15. BananaSam says:

it’s almost alarming how little I would have to modify my standard wardrobe for it to become fourth Doctor Cosplay. mostly I would just need to add a wig.

  16. Darkpen says:

The guys at Giantbomb expressed a very similar idea recently on either their podcast or their star trek online quicklook, about how funny it would be if you went to a renaissance fair roleplaying as star trek officers acting as if their holoroom broke, and they’re stuck in the renaissance period.

    • Capndan says:

I go to the Texas Ren Fest every year, and every single year there is at least one group of trekkies and one group of storm troopers there. Having trekkies there can make sense and is kinda funny, but the storm troopers always just seem kinda stupid to me.

      • tnag says:

Stormtroopers? Wow, some people are desperate to dress up in their expensive costumes. Trekkies make sense, stormtroopers don’t. Lame!
P.S. I’ve gone in Stargate (SG-1) clothes to the Ren Faire and a few people played along. Was fun! Now to get a full SG Team to go..

    • tnag says:

A guy I dated and some of his buddies actually did that in high school. They took their TNG uniforms and tricorders and hit the Ren Faire! Some of the staff played along a bit, but mostly were left alone to be silly nerds.

  17. Bacon Sammich says:

    What? That sounds…

    Fucking brilliant.

  18. Someone watches The Big Bang Theory! Woo!
….or that was a random, but awesome, thought lol

  21. RahnterBahnter says:

Must force friends into try this at a Medieval Times, since I have an inherent fear of the renaissance fair due to that creepy candle making guide.

  22. Scotty T says:

Sounds fun. Might have to try it … Even though I’ve never seen Dr. Who. =(

  23. Kit Fowley says:

Mind you, it’s not Dr. Who, and I had very little time to prepare, but I did go as a Victorian age time traveller to a Renaissance Faire in Bristol, Wisconsin last year. The costume has been much improved now, but I was lugging around an old camera and tripod and taking surveillance photos and the like.

  26. bearfoot says:

You, sir, are a Fraking genius.

that is all I can say.

  27. Abbey says:

What would be funnier would be to go to one of those pilgrim reenactments with a bunch of grade-schoolers and do it. The employees have to stay in character no matter what, or so I’ve heard, but the kids will tell you what year it really is, making it all the more fun.

  28. Dennis says:

    It’s like griefing a RenFaire.

  29. danny galaxy says:

i did this a few years ago.
before tennant and his brilliant clothing choices.

i did the tom baker era: coat, twenty-foot scarf, etc.

    middle of july.

    way too fuckin’ hot.

  31. Alison says:

I really want to do this at a Civil War reenactment. If you go to any ones south of Virginia, those guys are serious about reenactment, and they would probably play along with it, or at least be so thoroughly in-character that they would only perpetuate the fun.
